Red lentils thrive in Sardinia’s semi-arid Mediterranean climate, which offers dry summers, mild winters, and low humidity — all conditions that support strong, aromatic pulses.

The soils in the Samatzai area, rich in minerals and shaped by centuries of grain and legume cultivation, provide an ideal environment for lentils with balanced starch levels and clean, earthy flavour.

Roberto Musio cultivates his lentils with a focus on low-input, sustainable methods. Crop rotation, natural soil regeneration, and minimal mechanical intervention help preserve soil health and biodiversity. The lentils are dried carefully after harvesting to maintain their natural aroma and cooking quality.

The Azienda Agricola Musio Roberto was founded around sixty years ago in Samatzai, near Cagliari, by Mario Musio and is today run by his son Roberto. The family farm extends over approximately 50–60 hectares, in the heart of the Campidano plain.

The estate is specialized in open-field cultivation of legumes, seasonal vegetables, and cereals such as farro and Senatore Cappelli wheat. Alongside fresh produce, part of the harvest is transformed into artisanal products, including spreads, pâtés, preserved vegetables, and traditional pasta.

Roberto Musio maintains a direct relationship with his customers, selling his products weekly at the Cagliari market and participating since 2010 in the Campagna Amica farmers’ markets of the province. This direct exchange has shaped a production philosophy based on seasonality, consistency, and trust - values that define his work more than labels or claims.
